Quick answer
Downtown Charlotte is called Uptown. There is no train to the airport, but the CATS Sprinter bus runs from CLT to Uptown for $2.50. The LYNX Blue Line light rail ($2.20 a ride) links Uptown with South End and NoDa, and the Gold Line streetcar is free for now. For outer attractions like the Whitewater Center or Carowinds, plan on a car or rideshare.
Downtown is called "Uptown"
Charlotte calls its whole downtown business district Uptown. City Council made the name official on September 23, 1974. The historic center is the intersection of Trade and Tryon streets, where four bronze statues by Raymond Kaskey went up in 1995. If a hotel, event or map says "Uptown", it means the center of the city, not a northern suburb.
Uptown is the easiest base for a first trip: see the Uptown guide and where to stay in Uptown.

There is no train to the airport
None of the Blue Line's 26 stations is at the airport. Your options from CLT are:
- CATS Sprinter bus: $2.50 to the Charlotte Transportation Center in Uptown. Since October 5, 2026 it runs every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on weekends.
- Taxi: a $32 flat rate to Uptown (inside the I-277 loop), plus a $2.50 airport fee on every trip.
- Rideshare: pickup is on the Departures/Ticketing level (upper level, inner lanes, Zones 1–3), not at baggage claim.
The full comparison is in CLT airport to Uptown.
Light rail and streetcar basics
- The LYNX Blue Line runs 18.9 miles from I-485/South Boulevard through Uptown to UNC Charlotte. It's the line for South End and NoDa (25th Street and 36th Street stations).
- A one-way local bus or rail fare is $2.20, and a day pass is $6.60. K–12 riders with a valid transit or student ID pay $1.10, and children 5 and under ride free with an adult.
- The Blue Line uses proof of payment: buy before you board and keep your ticket. Riding without one can mean a $50 citation.
- The CityLYNX Gold Line streetcar crosses Uptown east to west and is fare-free until further notice. It's closed from 2 a.m. Saturday, October 24 to 4 a.m. Monday, October 26, 2026 for maintenance.
When you need a car
Uptown, South End and NoDa work without one. The big outer attractions don't: the U.S. National Whitewater Center charges $13 to park, and Carowinds sits right on the state line (its Fury 325 coaster crosses into South Carolina). Plan a car or rideshare for those days, and use Getting around Charlotte to decide.
Days and dates that catch people out
- The NASCAR Hall of Fame is closed on Tuesdays (open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. the other days).
- Crowders Mountain and Lake Norman state parks close on Christmas Day.
- The Novant Health Thanksgiving Eve Parade fills Tryon Street on Wednesday, November 25, 2026, and the Duke's Mayo Bowl is at Bank of America Stadium on December 26, 2026. Book Uptown hotels early for those dates.
