Day Trips from Charlotte

Crowders Mountain State Park

In Gaston County, 32 miles west of Charlotte. Two peaks look out over the Piedmont, and the Ridgeline Trail continues into Kings Mountain National Military Park and Kings Mountain State Park in South Carolina. There's hiking at all three accesses (about 20 miles of trail at Sparrow Springs), rock climbing at Linwood and bouldering at the Boulders access.

Day use is free. Gates close at 6 p.m. from November to February, 8 p.m. in March, April and October, and 9 p.m. from May to September. The park is closed on Christmas Day.

Kings Mountain National Military Park

A National Park Service site in Blacksburg, SC, which the National Park Service lists as 36.3 miles from Charlotte Douglas airport. The grounds are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the visitor center Wednesday to Sunday. Phone reception in the park is poor, and the park suggests you arrange any pickup before you go. You can combine it with Crowders Mountain on the same side of town.

Lake Norman State Park

In Iredell County, 40 miles north of Charlotte, on about 17 miles of the northern shore of Lake Norman, the largest manmade lake in North Carolina. The Itusi Trail is nearly 31 miles of single-track for mountain biking, and there's swimming, paddling and fishing. Day use is free except for boat rentals and swim passes. Day-use hours run from 7 a.m. to between 6 and 9 p.m. depending on the month, and the park closes on Christmas Day.

Daniel Stowe Conservancy

Botanical gardens at 6500 S New Hope Road in Belmont, about 20 miles from Uptown. From November 28 to December 30, 2026, the gardens host Holidays at the Garden, a walking light show from 5 to 10 p.m. (more under Christmas in Charlotte).

Anne Springs Close Greenway

A 2,100-acre nature preserve in Fort Mill, SC, "minutes south of Charlotte" in its own words, with 40 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, plus lakes for kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing. It's at 2573 Lake Haigler Drive. Check its site for trail status before you go.

Concord

Northeast of the city, Concord has Charlotte Motor Speedway, which runs Speedway Christmas (a 4-mile drive-through light show) from November 20, 2026 to January 3, 2027, and the SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord aquarium at Concord Mills, a rainy-day option.

McAdenville in December

"Just west of Charlotte", McAdenville becomes Christmas Town U.S.A. The lights are on from December 1 to 26, 2026, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Arrive before 5 p.m. for parking, and don't let your GPS route you via Hickory Grove Road, because traffic can't enter that way.
