CLT Airport to Uptown Charlotte: Every Way to Get There

Four ways into the city from Charlotte Douglas International Airport, with the fares and pickup spots the airport and CATS publish.

By Caleb Parsons · Updated October 19, 2026

Quick answer

There is no light rail to Charlotte's airport. The cheapest direct ride is the CATS Sprinter bus: $2.50 to the Charlotte Transportation Center in Uptown, every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on weekends. A taxi costs a $32 flat rate to Uptown plus a $2.50 airport fee. Rideshare pickup is on the upper (Departures) level, and the fare is whatever your app quotes.

Why there's no train

The LYNX Blue Line's 26 stations run from I-485/South Boulevard in the south to UNC Charlotte in the north, and none of them is at the airport. The CityLYNX Gold Line streetcar runs east–west across Uptown and doesn't go there either. So every public-transit trip from CLT starts on a bus.

CATS Sprinter: the simplest cheap option

The Sprinter (Route 5) runs between the airport and the Charlotte Transportation Center (CTC) in Uptown for $2.50. CATS's October 2026 service change, effective October 5, set it at every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 20 minutes on weekends. CATS lists service from 5:30 a.m. to 1:22 a.m. on weekdays, 6:00 a.m. to 1:22 a.m. on Saturdays and 6:00 a.m. to 1:14 a.m. on Sundays; check the timetable for exact first and last trips.

At CTC you can change to the Blue Line (for South End or NoDa) or the Gold Line streetcar. Sprinter buses are hybrid electric.

Route 60 to the Blue Line

CATS Route 60 links the airport with the Blue Line's Tyvola station every 30 minutes, seven days a week. The last trip leaves the airport at 11:45 p.m. on weekdays, 12:10 a.m. on Saturdays and 11:46 p.m. on Sundays. From Tyvola, ride the Blue Line north to South End or Uptown.

This route makes sense if you're staying along the southern half of the Blue Line. Because it's a bus plus a train, a $6.60 day pass (unlimited local bus and rail that day) can work out cheaper than two $2.20 fares if you'll ride again later.

Rideshare

App-based rides pick up on the Departures/Ticketing level: upper level, inner lanes, Zones 1–3. Head up from baggage claim before you request the car. The airport doesn't publish fares, so go by your app's quote, which rises at busy times.

Taxi

Taxis wait on the Arrivals/Baggage Claim level, outer curb, Zone 1. The airport's standard fares are a $32 flat rate to Uptown (inside the I-277 loop) and $16 for trips within 3 miles of CLT, plus a $2.50 airport fee on every trip. Anywhere else is metered: $3.50 to start, then $0.70 per 1/5 mile and $0.70 per minute stopped or in traffic.

Six companies work the airport queue, all take major credit cards, and they mainly run from 5 a.m. to midnight. Wheelchair-accessible taxis can be requested through the airport's Parking Dispatch Office at 704-359-4038.

Which one to pick

  • Solo, light luggage, staying in Uptown: the Sprinter.
  • Staying in South End: Sprinter to CTC then the Blue Line south, or Route 60 and the Blue Line north.
  • Group of three or four, or arriving late: a taxi's flat rate is easy to budget; compare it with your rideshare quote.
