One Day in Charlotte (Plus a Few-Hours Plan)

If you only have one day, stay central. This plan uses your feet and the light rail, with no car needed.

Quick answer

Spend the morning in Uptown: start at Trade and Tryon, then pick one big museum (the NASCAR Hall of Fame is the most Charlotte-specific). After lunch, ride the Blue Line ($2.20, or a $6.60 day pass) south to South End. Come back to Uptown for dinner or a game. Only got a few hours? Take the $2.50 Sprinter from the airport and stay within a few blocks of the Charlotte Transportation Center.

Morning: Uptown on foot

Start at Trade and Tryon, the city's original crossroads, with Raymond Kaskey's four bronze statues (1995) on its corners. Then choose one major stop:

  • NASCAR Hall of Fame: more than 50 interactive experiences, including iRacing simulators (minimum height 54 inches) and a Pit Crew Challenge. Open 10 a.m.–5 p.m., closed Tuesdays.
  • Mint Museum Uptown if you prefer art and design.
  • Discovery Place Science if you have kids with you.

A guided walk through Uptown

A one-hour guided walk that starts at Romare Bearden Park and covers Uptown's sports, art and history.

Afternoon: South End by light rail

Take the LYNX Blue Line south from an Uptown station to South End for lunch, shops and the Rail Trail. Fares are $2.20 one way or $6.60 for a day pass, and you buy before boarding. If history is your thing, the Levine Museum of the New South is now at 1800 South Boulevard in South End. See the South End guide.

Evening: back to Uptown

Ride back north for dinner. If your date lines up, catch a Hornets game at Spectrum Center or a Knights game at Truist Field (324 S Mint St, Third Ward). Otherwise, walk Tryon Street after dark. More ideas are in things to do in Charlotte.

Both areas are on the LYNX Blue Line. Open a hotel map to compare locations and prices.

Only a few hours (layover plan)

There's no train to the airport, so use the CATS Sprinter: $2.50 to the Charlotte Transportation Center (CTC) in Uptown, every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 20 on weekends. A taxi is a $32 flat rate to Uptown plus a $2.50 airport fee, and ride-app pickup is on the upper (Departures) level.

From CTC, Trade and Tryon is a short walk. The free Gold Line streetcar stops at CTC/Arena if you want to ride across Uptown without walking. Keep to one stop, and build in the trip back plus airport security. Details: CLT airport to Uptown.

If you get more time

Turn it into 2 days in Charlotte (adds NoDa and an outer attraction) or 3 days in Charlotte. All the plans are on the itineraries page.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough for Charlotte? It's enough for Uptown and South End. Both are on the Blue Line, so you can see them without a car. Outer attractions like Carowinds or the Whitewater Center need more time.

Can I visit Uptown Charlotte on a layover? Yes, if your layover is long enough. Take the $2.50 CATS Sprinter to the Charlotte Transportation Center, keep to a few blocks and allow time to get back through security.

Is the NASCAR Hall of Fame open every day? No. It's closed on Tuesdays and open 10 a.m.–5 p.m. on other days.
